High Score 2019: composition and sound art for gaming

High score welcomes top international and local composers for two-day event on music in games

Manami Matsumae, Takahiro Izutani, Chipzel and more announced for High Score, which returns as part of Melbourne International Games Week

Composers, musicians and developers with an interest in creating the sonic landscapes of today’s interactive games are invited to hone their skills and industry knowledge at High Score: Composition and Sound Art for Gaming, which will take place at Southbank’s game development hub The Arcade, Saturday 5 October and Sunday 6 October 2019.

Presented by APRA AMCOS in partnership with Creative Victoria, and part of Melbourne International Games Week (MIGW), this year’s High Score expands to two days of expert talks, workshops and networking with a roster of renowned international guests and some of Australia’s best in gaming music. The two previous High Score events sold out.

Speakers include acclaimed Japanese games composers Manami Matsumae (Mega Man series) and Takahiro Izutani (Metal Gear Solid series), who will deliver a joint keynote. Game Boy composer Niamh Houston aka Chipzel will travel from Northern Ireland to join Kenny McAlpine and The Melbourne Chiptune Academy for an all-star panel discussion on the ‘chiptune’ genre.

Manami Matsumae said: "I am very thankful to have been invited to speak at High Score. This is my first time in Australia, so I am looking forward to meeting with and exchanging knowledge and skills with gamers, fans and fellow musicians. See you in October!"

Day 1 speakers from the local industry include Double J radio presenter and games composer Tim Shiel, who will showcase his ambient score for puzzle game The Gardens Between, and composer and audio designer Belinda Coomes, who will discuss her soundtrack for the upcoming game Ring of Pain.

ABC ME’s Spawn Point Angharad 'Rad' Yeo will facilitate on Saturday. Panels and short talks focusing on project development, business management, and the value of music in games will round out the day, with a networking event in the evening.

On Sunday, ticket holders will have ample opportunity to gain advice from guest speakers in a range of hands-on composition workshops, tech courses and music feedback sessions. Offerings include scoring tips with Adelaide composer Christopher Larkin (Hollow Knight), sonic exploration with sound designer Anne-Marie Weber (Hand of Fate 1 and 2, Star Wars), A&R feedback from The Otherworld Agency’s Fabian Malabello, and much more.

High Score program manager Greg Morrow, Manager Film and TV, APRA AMCOS said: “The thriving local games industry fosters global opportunities for Australian music creators. Composing music and sound for games requires a unique skill set, and the programming of High Score is a reflection of that.”

“We encourage composers and musicians of all levels to attend High Score, as well as games developers and industry who want to learn more and meet the people making music in games.”

Now in its fifth year, MIGW is the largest games festival in South-east Asia, with 30+ conferences, events, and activities for games enthusiasts, industry, educators and families. More than 77,000 people will attend over nine days, from 5-13 October, to explore the future of games, network and test their playing skills.
